Ebook About
The classic coming-of-age novel about a young Chinese woman torn between Eastern and Western cultures by the Nobel Prize–winning author of The Good Earth.  Kwei-lan is a traditional Chinese girl—taught by her mother to submit in all things, “as a flower submits to sun and rain alike.” Her marriage was arranged before she was born. As she approaches her wedding day, she’s surprised by one aspect of her anticipated life: Her husband-to-be has been educated abroad and follows many Western ideas that Kwei-lan was raised to reject. When circumstances push the couple out of the family home, Kwei-lan finds her assumptions about tradition and modernity tested even further. East Wind: West Wind is a sensitive, early exploration of the cross-cultural themes that went on to become a hallmark of Buck’s acclaimed novels. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

Book East Wind: West Wind: The Saga of a Chinese Family (Oriental Novels of Pearl S. Buck Book 8) Review :

Love Pearl Bucks books on China. Her novels are imaginative and believable. I enjoy her style. Very difficult to truly bring characters to life but she does it every time!! As historical novels are my favorite books to read (if not silly romances) I find her research leaves no stone unturned. Of course being novels, she must fill in many blanks and does it smoothly and makes history come alive. As I have read several of her books now and find the same is true for all of them!! Sons was the only one I did not care for however it was the subject matter and not her writing!! . I have shied away from China in the past because of their lack of human rights and their history concerning women which is dismal to put it mildly. Have missed out on many well written and educational books. NOTE-still the last country I would choose to visit!! What a talented and generous woman Ms. Buck was. She has shown us through example, in her personal and professional life, how one person can make a difference. Monica P Desjardins
Well written, showing some of the potential that would unfold with more compelling characters and greater scope in The Good Earth. This novel is a first person narrative, as if it were a series of communications from a young Chinese woman and an understanding foreign friend. Thus she makes her first effort to open the Chinese perspective to the Western imagination. It's an artifice that sometimes gets in the way of the flow of the story, but the perspective is conveyed in a convincing way overall. I note this only because the point of view taken in The Good Earth (third person immersed in Chinese environment and idiom but also accessible to the Western reader) surpasses it incomparably. This book is an eloquent early rendition of Pearl Buck's distinctive ability to mediate between Chinese and Western perspectives.
